ABOUT THE ALBUM
The Will & Reva EP and Tour is a Lewis and Clark (i.e. Gray and Williams) expedition into the unknown.
Our EP, “The Renegade” is a bellwether. We want to be renegades. We want to do renegade work. We want to break ranks with what has come before that has dealt out unkind values, aesthetics and mythologies. We are renegades because we don’t adhere to or believe the Overculture. We are renegades in the work of witnessing what we and one another and the possibilities of love and art and friendship are up to.

We met while I was an artist in residence at the Contemporary Music Center on Martha’s Vineyard. Reva was visiting the campus as a guest lecturer and performer.
We wrote our first song together when Reva was in Boston with her band Gretel and I had moved back to the Massachusetts area to teach the songwriting class at the music school I had attended. We started a small batch of songs and began crafting a sound and an ethos. There was darkness and sorrow living underneath the songs.

We wrote, but never recorded the songs, and for a couple of years, we carried on something like an oral tradition with lyrics and melodies shifting and reforming. The songs grew-up; developed their own personalities, ways of being and being known.

After touring together and living through the process of making Broke*, so many people commented on our duet covering Patty Griffin’s “Top of The World” that we were again reminded that we should document some of our songs, and we made a pact to do so. So, we began recording “The Renegade”, the first micro-collection of the many songs we’ve written together, and will continue to write.

Broke* Screening Tour (Summer 2012)

A 17-city screening tour of the award winning documentary film, Broke*, has launched with three shows in Los Angeles. The intimate screenings, held in unique venues and private residences is also highlighted by an acoustic performance combining the talents of writer/artists Reva Williams and Will Gray. Both appear in the film created by Gray on the sustainability challenges that emerging artists face today.

Broke* won a juried award for ‘Most Original Vision in a Music Film” at the 2011 Nashville Film Festival and has screened at numerous colleges and industry events. Etan Rosenbloom, writer at ASCAP.com called it “…a documentary rich in insight, range and emotional power, but with no detectable agenda. In other words, it’s a must-see for anyone interested in where music and those who make it are headed.”

Williams and Gray have also recorded a six-song EP and will be performing songs from that collection in conjunction with the tour. The Renegade EP will be released online through the United For Opportunity (UFO) collective. It will be available in late July. Although both artists are pursuing solo careers, the screening tour presented an opportunity to write and tour together. Reva Williams, speaks to the hybrid tour saying, “We both have our own projects, but we are lighter and more nimble as the two of us instead of one.”

The tour includes a screening of the film, a short acoustic set and a Q& A session with the artists. Venue locations and ticket details are available below.

Following on-the-verge artist Will Gray through the recording of his debut album (featuring production by the Grammy-winning T Bone Burnett), Broke* chronicles the stories of artists and executives searching for ways to thrive in today’s music industry. The film digs beneath the clichés to reveal an industry struggling to find a new identity, and an artist who’s simply trying to establish one.
